The myth of Procri and Cefalo is a famous and tragic tale of love, jealousy, and betrayal recounted in Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*.
Cephalus, a handsome hunter, and Procris, a princess of Athens, were caught up in a series of misunderstandings and traps that led to her accidental death.
In particular, the scene depicted here portrays the tragic conclusion of the myth: Cephalus finds Procris dying, accidentally wounded by the spear of her unsuspecting husband.
The scene depicted here draws on the work of Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, a leading figure of the Lombard Baroque, particularly in the dramatic composition of the figures, set within a landscape that is, however, very different—one devoid of other figures.
The painting was previously restored and re-stretched onto a new, professional, expandable stretcher frame.
