Wearing a beret and a navy blue sailor’s jacket tied with a red scarf, the figure stands behind a large steering wheel. His natural posture, expressive face, and the numerous details of his costume give this small sculpture a strong presence and character.

The piece is designed to serve a practical purpose: the base in front of the wheel features a finely grooved surface intended for striking matches. This dual function—both decorative and utilitarian—links the object to the refined and sometimes humorous smoking accessories produced in Vienna in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The sculpture retains a beautiful original polychrome finish in rich tones: deep blue for the sailor’s jacket and beret, red for the scarf, beige for the pants, and shades of brown for the face and hands. The wheel and its base feature a pleasant golden-brown patina.
