Limoges Enamel Carriage Lantern Depicting Henri II And Diane De Poitiers, Early 10th Century

A rare and charming carriage lantern made of sheet metal, entirely decorated with painted enamels in the style of the famous Limoges enamels, dating from the early 19th century.

This elegant, architecturally shaped lantern features a refined design of

Renaissance-style arabesques accented with white and gold on a black background. The four sides are fitted with domed, green-tinted glass panes, giving the piece a remarkable decorative presence.

The ornamentation is particularly interesting as it incorporates the emblems of Henry II and Diane de Poitiers:

  • the crescent moon, an attribute of Diana;
  • the crowned “H,” the monogram of King Henry II.

These motifs, inspired by French Renaissance decor, make this piece particularly evocative of the world of the royal favorite and the Fontainebleau school.

The interior still retains its original candleholder.

The only thing worth noting is the absence of the handle, though this does not detract from the presentation quality of this rare lantern.

A very beautiful collector’s item that will naturally find its place in a collection dedicated to the decorative arts, the history of transportation, or in a cabinet of curiosities.
