Elchinger France “free-form Cup,” Yellow And Black Glazed Ceramic, Ca. 1960
A large, free-form, asymmetrical glazed ceramic bowl featuring a graphic design that combines a bright yellow crackled glaze with two broad, curved brown-black motifs in a ribbed relief pattern.
With its highly dynamic design, contrasting color palette, and sculptural treatment, this piece is fully in keeping with the revival of French ceramics in the 1950s and 1960s. It evokes the spirit of the creations of Georges Jouve, Pol Chambost, and Roger Capron in Vallauris, while retaining the highly recognizable character of Elchinger’s productions from Soufflenheim.
I would date this bowl to around 1955–1965, likely during the Fernand Elchinger (1911–1975) era. Fernand led the factory starting in 1936 and thoroughly modernized its production, particularly after the war.
