Object description :

"Andre Baud For Vallauris, Ceramic Jug And 6 Glasses Set, Ca 1960"

André Baud in Vallauris, ceramic jug and 6 glasses set, ca. 1960
Each piece features a hand-painted decoration, with a graphic play of black and yellow lines and loops on a white background. The interior of the glasses and jug is enameled in bright contrasting colors (orange, green, yellow, and turquoise), typical of southern productions of the period.

This type of service illustrates the convivial and decorative spirit of Vallauris ceramics in the 1960s and 1970s, a period when the town experienced a great boom thanks to the meeting of artisanal tradition and modern design.

Set in perfect condition. All the pieces are marked “VALLAURIS” except for the light green cup.

Biography – André Baud (1903–1986)
André Baud trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bourges and then at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, where he received several distinctions in the 1920s. After working for various earthenware factories, he settled in Vallauris in 1942 with his wife Micheline Bour, taking over a factory from the Milazzo family. Together, they developed a production of culinary, utilitarian, and decorative ceramics, distributed in their own store.

After Suzanne Ramié (Madoura workshop), André Baud established himself as a key figure in the renaissance of ceramics in Vallauris. He worked closely with Robert Picault and Roger Capron (Callis workshop, 1945). In 1946, their trio—Madoura, Baud, and Callis—organized the first exhibition of Vallauris potters at the Nérolium, the origin of the future International Biennial of Ceramic Art.

In this effervescence, he rubbed shoulders with Picasso, Paul Éluard, and Henri Grailhe, and participated in the creation of a major group of ceramists with Roger Capron, Jacques Innocenti, Robert Picault, and the Poterie du Grand Chêne.

Highly committed, he also took on responsibilities in the Vallaurienne d'Expansion Céramique Association (AVEC) and in local cultural organizations. Baud developed a personal style in which sober and pure forms highlighted matte black or white backgrounds contrasting with vivid glazes. His inspiration mixed astronomy, flora, and fauna, and he created both utilitarian pieces and unique works of high quality.

Despite financial difficulties that led him to leave Vallauris in 1969, his work remains widely recognized, rewarded by numerous international prizes in Albisola, Paris, Istanbul, and Vallauris. His contribution is considered essential to modern French ceramics and to the influence of Vallauris in the post-war period.
