Set of two glasses in thick cut Bohemian crystal, circa 1900
Made of clear crystal lined with cobalt blue, with engraved decoration of stylized female figures in a plant environment. Perfect condition. One glass is slightly larger than the other, a difference that may evoke the 19th-century tradition of designing separate pairs for men and women, while here reaffirming the glassmaker’s conscious play with this heritage.

About Bohemian Crystal
Bohemian crystal is a variety of lead oxide glass, transparent and clear like rock crystal (a synonym for transparent, uncolored quartz).
In the 18th century, Bohemia distinguished itself in the history of the crystal industry both by the creation of an artificial crystal and by the quality of its glass workers. The term “crystal” is older, as it was already used in Venice at the end of the 15th century by Venetian glassmakers to describe objects made of particularly fine and transparent glass.
It was not until the 18th century that “Bohemian crystal” became synonymous with the quality of a hard and brilliant glass that supplanted Venetian production on royal tables. At this time, glass workers from Bohemia emigrated to Northwestern Europe, bringing with them their technique and know-how. Toward the end of the 18th century, Bohemian crystal was itself supplanted by English crystal, from which today’s modern formula of crystal derives.
