E. Fulche… (19th Century) : “the Military Salute”
E. Fulche…(Late 19th-century French school) : “The Military Salute,” oil oncanvas, 65 x 48 cm, presented in a varnished wooden frame (showing signs of wear), 81 x 64 cm.
Canvas has been trimmed (the end of the signature is missing) and roughly mountedon cardboard with a gray mat, oxidized varnish, and a few scratches, secured with a medium board.
A true naïve artist in the tradition of Douanier Rousseau, our artist depictsa decorated veteran with a wooden leg saluting the sentry on duty at his guardhouse at the Lourcine barracks, located at 37 Boulevard Port Royal.
A poster regarding the 1889 draft lottery reminds us that conscription was a matter of chance at the time.
A charming painting and historical artifact.
