19th Century Wedgwood Blue Jasperware Mantel Clock, Circa 1890

Artist: Wedgewood
An elegant late 19th-century Wedgwood mantel clock, dating to circa 1890, featuring the distinctive blue and white Jasperware decoration for which the celebrated English manufacturer is renowned.

The architectural case is decorated with finely applied white neoclassical reliefs against a soft matte blue ground. Classical female figures, putti, trees and foliage are arranged across the case, with a particularly charming scene depicting a figure in a chariot drawn by a lion. Radiating acanthus leaves and ornamental borders complete the richly detailed composition.

At the centre, the circular enamel dial displays black Arabic numerals with red quarter-hour markings and delicate hand-painted floral garlands. Finely shaped gilt metal hands are surrounded by an ornate gilt brass bezel fitted with a hinged convex glass cover.

The reverse houses a traditional mechanical brass movement beneath a hinged metal cover. Combining Wedgwood’s characteristic neoclassical aesthetic with traditional late 19th-century clockmaking, this decorative timepiece has a wonderful presence despite its relatively compact proportions.

A beautiful and highly decorative example of Victorian-era Wedgwood, ideal for display on a mantelpiece, console, desk or within a collection of English ceramics.

The clock has not been tested, and the current working condition of the mechanism is therefore unknown.
