Monumental Nubian Floor Lamp In Carved African Walnut, Gilt And Silvered – C.1900
An important monumental torchère depicting a Nubian male figure, entirely carved from precious solid wood identified as African walnut, with polychrome, gilt and silvered decoration.
The male figure is shown standing and dressed in an elaborate Orientalist costume. The headdress, tunic, drapery and various ornamental details are enhanced with gilt and silvered finishes, while other areas retain the natural brown tone of the wood. This combination of brown, gold and silver creates a particularly rich and theatrical decorative effect.
The face, hands, legs, folds of the costume and ornamental details display genuine sculptural workmanship, vigorously and expressively carved. The figure supports a large multi-light candelabrum with scrolling foliate arms, terminating in flower- and leaf-shaped candle cups. The whole rests on a rocaille-style base carved with large acanthus leaves.
The construction is traditionally made from several sections of solid wood, individually carved, applied and joined together. Views of the reverse and underside clearly show the wood grain, tool marks, traditional joints and applied carved elements, confirming that this is a genuine solid-wood sculpture rather than a moulded or composite reproduction.
The surface treatment combines the natural brown tone of the African walnut with gilt and silvered highlights. The finish shows old and irregular wear, revealing underlying preparation layers in places and contributing to the authentic patina and character of the piece.
Probably Italian, in the Venetian and Neo-Baroque taste, dating from the late 19th century or around 1900. This geographical attribution is stylistic, as no maker’s mark has been identified.
The electrical fittings are later than the sculpture. They should be checked before use and would ideally benefit from a complete professional rewiring.
