Empire-period Tripod Pedestal Table In Mahogany, Gilded Bronze, And Black Marble, Circa 1810–1820

Circular Empire-period pedestal table, made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, resting on a tripod base with a concave cutout.

It is supported by three particularly decorative tubular legs, adorned at the top with antique-style gilded bronze female busts, crowned with a diadem and featuring long, intricately styled locks of hair. The legs terminate at their bases with bare feet in gilded bronze, another characteristic motif of the neoclassical repertoire of the Empire period.

The circular, mahogany-veneered rim supports a molded black marble top with a concave profile, whose simplicity contrasts elegantly with the richness of the gilded bronze ornamentation.

The original construction, the visible joints on the reverse, and the fastenings of the various elements are consistent with a date of the early 19th century, around 1810–1820.

A pedestal table that is both decorative and well-balanced, whose three gilded bronze caryatids give it a more striking presence than Empire models with more classical bases.

Some signs of wear, minor repairs, and old restorations, consistent with the piece’s age.
A bronze ornament above a woman’s head is missing.
