A very elegant pair of ornamental vases in polychrome and gilded porcelain, Paris porcelain from the mid-19th century, circa 1845–1860.

Baluster-shaped, the vases rest on wide bases with scalloped edges, embellished with shells, volutes, foliage, and rocaille motifs. The composition, which is particularly dynamic, draws freely from the Louis XV repertoire, which was being revived during the July Monarchy and the Second Empire.

Each vase is adorned with two side handles formed of bold, openwork scrolls, enlivened by reliefs, orange-hued enamels, and gold highlights. The flared neck, with a scalloped and contoured rim, features a design of white ribs that are heavily speckled and highlighted with gilding. The body, set against a deep, glossy black background framed by turquoise-green enamel, is embellished with broad foliage in relief and particularly lavish gilded scrollwork.

Each side features a different design, lending this pair great decorative richness. On one side, luminous bouquets of polychrome flowers—roses, irises, tulips, pansies, and small wildflowers—stand out brilliantly against the black background. On the reverse, white porcelain reserves feature delightful fruit compositions: bunches of grapes, cherries, apples, peaches, plums, and berries, finely painted in fresh, nuanced tones. These scenes are framed by gilded scrollwork and garlands in relief.

The bases, with an aubergine and white background, are themselves lavishly decorated with shells, foliage, and green medallions, seamlessly extending the refinement of the entire set. The vases are secured to their pedestals by a central fastener beneath the base.

This pair attests to the virtuosity of the Parisian workshops specializing in ornamental porcelain in the mid-19th century. With its decorative exuberance, vibrant polychromy, and the quality of its gilding, it reflects the style of the famous models produced by Jacob Petit.
