Female Terracotta Head, 19th Century, Medieval Troubadour Style
An elegant fragment of a terracotta sculpture depicting a young woman wearing an imposing medieval-inspired hennin. The face, with its delicate and serene features, reflects high-quality modeling, characteristic of the Neo-Gothic style that enjoyed great popularity in the 19th century.
The headdress, richly adorned with cabochons and geometric motifs, evokes the idealized representations of the Middle Ages that were in vogue during the Second Empire and until the end of the 19th century. This work was originally part of a larger statue, now lost, of which only this particularly expressive head remains.
Crafted from molded terracotta and finely finished, it retains traces of its original patina. The visible breaks result from the destruction of the original sculpture and lend this fragment a highly appealing archaeological and decorative character.
A curiosity and collector’s item, this remnant of neo-Gothic statuary also serves as a remarkable decorative piece, appreciated for its romantic aesthetic and its evocation of the Middle Ages.
