Silver-hilled Sword - Hallmarks: Paris 1785 & Fermier General - 18th Century - Louis XVI -

Silver court sword, Louis XV style, 1767 model, Louis XVI period, with a silver hilt bearing the 1785 hallmark of the City of Paris, the Ferme Générale hallmark, and the silversmith’s hallmark.
Olive-shaped pommel adorned with a faceted cabochon in a diamond-point cut and a rivet button.
Flat crossguard flaring at its center, decorated with knots and a diamond-cut cabochon.
Small donkey’s foot and a double-bridge guard with symmetrical bridges, featuring an exterior decoration of oblique striations in each quadrant surrounded by a border frieze.
On the inner surface of the bridges, a relief decoration of several diamond-cut cabochons of varying sizes.
Goldsmith’s hallmarks, the Paris hallmark, and the Fermier Général’s hallmark are found on the ferrule against the guard escutcheon (see photos).
The tapered shaft is decorated with knots and cabochons cut into diamond points of various sizes.
Triangular blade with three hollow sides, the main one bearing, framed by a sun, a trophy of arms and the motto “VIVE LE ROY.”
Remnants of molten gold gilding at the bottom of the engravings adorning the base of the blade.
Traces of azure on the other secondary faces, featuring a round, crowned cartouche bearing the arms of France (a shield with three fleurs-de-lis) and military attributes.

Silver swords were awarded to elite units or commissioned for high-ranking military or civilian officials.
Royal etiquette required nobles and all those who had served in the military to carry a sword, following the decision of the Council of War on November 17, 1716.
