Rifle With Stock And "chassepot" Mechanism, "j-ruellon" Type, St-etienne - 19th Century - 1880

Artist: Mécanisme De Type " J-ruellon - St-etienne
An unusual poacher’s or self-defense rifle, featuring a so-called “Chassepot” mechanism and a “J-RUELLON” firing system, made in Saint-Étienne around 1880, 19th century.
Mechanism featuring a sliding breech concealed within the butt plate.
Flat, recessed hammer and a folding trigger that is invisible when at rest.
After unlocking the rear of the pommel, the mechanism slides, opening the breech to allow the insertion of a pin-type cartridge, followed by closing and locking the breech; firing can take place after cocking the hammer and extending the trigger.
Heavy steel barrel with a smooth bore in 14- or 20-gauge pin-style.
Shoulder stock visible at the rear of the butt plate and a metal plug at the muzzle. See photos.
The tip of the butt plate, which was originally made of horn, was likely restored by a previous owner with a machined steel butt plate.
All parts of the breech block are engraved.
The firing mechanism and the breech opening and closing system function very well; see photos.
Length with stock: 120 cm
Length without stock: 91 cm
Length without the muzzle cap: 87 cm
