émile Gallois (1882–1965) – View Of Chartres: Rue De La Poissonnerie – Watercolor

Artist: Emile Gallois

A superb original watercolor by Émile Gallois on card stock depicting a picturesque view of Rue de la Poissonnerie in Chartres. The composition, rendered in ascending perspective, showcases the historic architecture of the old town center with a traditional horse-drawn carriage in the foreground, revealing in the background the majestic facade of Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral and its famous Gothic rose window.

Signature: Signed E. Gallois
Titled in pencil on the back of the mount: “La Rue de la Poissonnerie”

Dimensions: 36 x 49 cm

The watercolor is in very good condition, with vibrant colors. Presented in its original cardboard mat with a gold border (note: there is a slight trace of old water damage in the lower right corner of the mat, which does not affect the artwork).

Émile Gallois (1882–1965) was a French painter, watercolorist, and illustrator renowned for his delicate depictions of architectural heritage and regional costumes.

Active during the first half of the 20th century, he specialized in views of cities, historic monuments, and picturesque scenes from provincial France (Paris, Brittany, Touraine, and Eure-et-Loir). His watercolor work is distinguished by its highly precise architectural lines, a subtle mastery of light, and a palette of soft, nuanced tones. In addition to his works from life, Gallois published several richly illustrated reference books devoted to folk arts, folk costumes, and traditional decorative motifs.
