A young woman in a white silk gown stands before a barely sketched landscape, her hand clasped around a long, light-colored staff. The costume is the highlight of this work.
The camisole is embroidered with small bouquets—blue, yellow, red—and edged along its entire length with gathered ruffles in a vivid coral pink. The same shade of pink appears throughout: in ruffles at the cuffs, in wide festoons on the skirt, and especially in the scarf worn across the chest, which is tied at the shoulder in a generous bow. Beneath the camisole, the front of a white lace bodice is visible. The entire scene fits within a 31 x 22 cm canvas: the embroidered bouquets, the beads, and the flowers on the bonnet are painted with the tip of the brush, with a delicacy that comes close to that of a miniature.

The hairstyle is worth a closer look. Powdered hair pulled up very high on a cushion, a garland of pearls and tiny blue flowers arranged diagonally, and a pleated lace bonnet that falls behind the ear in long strands dotted with small pink flowers. A blue egret feather completes the look. Around the neck, a simple black velvet ribbon and a thin cord that disappears beneath the lace.

The face, meanwhile, is rendered without embellishment: a fair complexion, well-defined eyebrows, brown eyes turned to the left, and a slight smile. The model has a determined air that contrasts with the affectation of the costume.

The background is rendered in shades of blue-gray, with dark clouds and a low horizon on the left: the setting is outdoors, but deliberately left blurred so as not to compete with the figure. This was a technique frequently used by French portraitists during those years.

There is no signature or inscription on the reverse that would allow us today to attribute this portrait to a specific painter. However, the quality of the facial modeling and the precision of the embroidery place the work above standard production.

Condition: good. The canvas is original, has never been re-stretched, and sits firmly on its antique stretcher. A regular network of craquelure covers the surface, visible mainly in the grays of the background, with no lifting. The background has been retouched in the past. The figure and the costume are in very good condition.

Frame: a beautiful 19th-century gilded wood and stucco frame, drawing on the decorative repertoire of the previous century. The exterior features a relief decoration of flowers, foliage, and scrollwork, with shells in the center of the sides and bouquets at the corners. On the inside, a smooth groove followed by a thin molding with a plant motif frames the canvas. The gilding shows signs of wear and minor imperfections from use, with the red primer showing through in places—which lends it a great deal of warmth. There are a few chips in the stucco, with no crude repairs.
