The pommel (maewa)—a flat piece shaped like an inverted U with a shallow double notch on each side, providing the rider with a grip to mount the horse — is made of nashiji-lacquered wood with a maki-e design centered on a war fan (gunbai), an inkstone, and a scholar’s brush, set against a background of chrysanthemums, waterfalls, and floral motifs.
At the rear, the pommel (shizuwa) is made of orange-hued nashiji lacquer—it has a shape similar to that of the front pommel, except that its extensions, beneath the rider’s thighs, curve forward.
The two longitudinal pieces (igi) protrude (igisaki) and feature slits for the stirrup leathers, connecting the pommel to the pommel back.
