Sugar Hammer From The High Atlas, Morocco. Early 20th Century Or Earlier.

A rare traditional Amazigh (Berber) sugar hammer, likely from the high valleys of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

This carved and incised wooden tool was used in Berber households to break up conical sugar loaves before preparing mint tea.
Stylized in the shape of an animal’s head, both sides are adorned with incised geometric motifs characteristic of the region’s decorative repertoire, as seen among the Aît Atta or Aît Ouaouzguite.
Its size and elaborate decorations suggest a ceremonial use as a symbol of prosperity; it may have been given as a wedding gift or displayed in the home as a sign of abundance.
Hardwood with a warm patina alternating between shades of honey brown and deep black, attesting to its age and handling over time.
Signs of wear and minor chips from use. Unrestored.Early 20th century or earlier.
