Two-tray mathematics or architect’s instrument case, circa 1820–1830
Brass, steel, ebony, wood, velvet; case: 20x14.5x4 cm.
A lovely box of drawing or architectural instruments, unsigned but French, from the Restoration period.
The top tray contains a large compass with interchangeable points, including a dry point, an ink point,
a pencil point, and an extension; a small, medium-sized compass with dry points; a small
compass with three interchangeable points and a three-jointed baluster compass; and finally, a drawing needle and a weight.
The lower tray contains a proportion compass, a half-foot that doubles as a set square and level, providing
measurements in feet and meters, an ebony ruler, and a double brass pencil holder.
The lid holds a brass protractor and a second protractor made of horn.
The box features a rosewood decoration of flower baskets and plant motifs.
It still has its key.
A perfectly uniform and complete set.
