Triple Revolving Seal with Three Ducal Arms, Polished
Steel, Louis XIV Period
Superb thumb seal with forged steel bow handle, of armourer's quality, preserved in very good overall condition.
The seal matrix, fitted with three revolving faces, displays particularly fine workmanship: precise construction, bow engraved with scrolling foliage and acanthus motifs, spring-loaded pivot mechanism with retaining collar, pierced suspension loop, and numerous details characteristic of high-quality craftsmanship.
The three seal faces respectively display: intertwined initials in a mavelot-style monogram beneath a ducal coronet; an escutcheon engraved with three lozenges beneath a helm; a shield bearing three lozenges surmounted by a ducal coronet. Photographs illustrate the refinement of engraving and elegance of the piece.
This seal likely belonged to a person of elevated rank and may be dated to around 1700.
Dimensions: 4.5 × 3 × 2 cm (1.77 × 1.18 × 0.79 in).
Condition: very good condition overall.
An old repair to the suspension loop is present, stable and without significant impact on the display or appreciation of the piece.
