Louis XIV-regence Period: Purse Enamels Plates: Wedding Of A Pilgrim Couple
Artist: émail De Genève
Pair of museum-quality, polychrome-painted,
copper enamel wedding plates, painted polychrome on white background, white counter-enamel, used to adorn a purse to which the enameled plates are attached by means on holes. The two central holes held the purse's opening cord. (Text from the Musée Sainte-Croix in Poitiers, which has a pair on display).
A double interest here: bride and groom decided to make Pilgrimage together, and we see them both wearing the sacred insignia of St Jacques de Compostelle...
These are not Limoges enamels, as is often the case, but Geneva enamels, due to the white background on reverse. landscapes are more descriptive, costumes less solemn. This origin is rare and interesting.
H: 9cm x 6cm .
Beautiful quality, good condition, some missing on edges, visible in our photos.
