Yuri Gurov Modern Expressionist Painting: Portrait Of A Woman And Child, Motherhood 100 Cm

A large vertical composition depicting motherhood, painted in oil on canvas and signed “Youri Gurov” on the reverse. The scene shows a mother leaning toward her child, the two figures united in a very tight circular movement. The faces of the mother and child are deliberately simplified and rendered with thick, almost sculpted brushwork, giving the work as a whole a monumental presence.

The color palette is dominated by deep browns, earthy reds, blacks, and golden highlights. These touches of gold define the faces, hands, and several secondary elements of the composition. They lend an almost sacred dimension to the subject and bring the work closer to the aesthetic of icons, without resorting to traditional religious representation. The red arc surrounding the two figures reinforces this impression of a niche or mandorla.

Motherhood is treated here with great solemnity and restraint. The painter seeks neither anecdote nor descriptive realism: the entire composition rests on the mother’s body enveloping that of the child. The hands, the tilted face, and the child’s head constitute the emotional focal point of the work. The thick, scratched, and reworked paint gives the painting an expressionist character.

The treatment is reminiscent of certain trends in Central and Eastern European figurative painting from the second half of the 20th century, in which the Byzantine heritage and the iconographic tradition are reinterpreted through a modern and expressionist style. The large, very narrow format further accentuates the monumentality of the figure.
