Armand Guéry Oil On Canvas Autumn On The “suippe” Orainville 1895
This masterful work dates from the height of Armand Guéry’s artistic maturity, one year after his acclaim at the 1894 Salon des Artistes Français.A label on the back of the painting from an exhibition in 1896, and another one: “Pottier, Packer of Paintings & Works of Art, 14 & 9 rue Gaillon, Paris.”
A true “landscape painter of the Champagne sky,” the artist presents here a particularly accomplished composition on the theme of the banks of the Suippe.
The painting depicts a riverside view of “Orainville-sur-Suippe” in autumn, bathed in a soft, misty light. The artist uses a subtle and sensitive touch to render the feathery appearance of the trees, their leaves turned russet by the season, flanked by birches with graphic silhouettes. The foreground isenhanced by a highly technical play of mirror-like reflections, capturing the subtle nuances of the calm water and the tall grasses along the banks. The depth of field, enhanced by a flock of birds flying against a low, nuanced sky, attests to Guéry’s great skill in capturing themelancholic and serene atmosphere of the wilderness. A superb and significant period frame in wood and gilded stucco, richly carved with a frieze of acanthus leaves in high relief and fluted moldings, very characteristic of late 19th-century styles.

Born in Reims in 1853, he studied painting under two great masters of French landscape painting: François-Louis Français and Louis Aimé Japy. They instilled in him the rigor and poetry of the Barbizon School (painting from life outdoors, the careful study of trees and natural light). An artist recognized by his peers, as early as the 1880s, he exhibited regularly at the highly selective Salon des artistes français. His breakthrough came in 1894, when he won a prestigious second-class medal for his work Les Regains.
