Pair Of Antique Carved Wooden Panels—jungle Scene Featuring Tigers And Goats

Pair of antique carved wooden panels – Jungle scene with tigers and goats

Anglo-Ceylonese / Anglo-Indian, late 19th – early 20th century

A pair of wooden panels deeply carved in high relief, highly decorative, crafted from a dark, almost black hardwood (ebony-like). Both panels feature a curved top and a flat base that allows them to stand upright—ideal as bookends or as decorative objects on a cabinet, shelf, or desk.

This richly detailed style of carving, with its dense canopy of vegetation, vines, and jungle animals, is characteristic of Sinhalese (Sri Lankan) export crafts, which were highly prized by European travelers and collectors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Decoration:

  • Panel 1: Beneath a dense canopy of trees where monkeys are climbing, two leaping tigers attack a crocodile, surrounded by tropical foliage and ferns.
  • Panel 2: A banyan tree with hanging aerial roots, beneath which a herd of goats/deer moves among the foliage.

Both panels are framed by a wavy, braided frieze and a thin, serrated border—a decorative motif typical of this school of sculpture.

Material: dark hardwood (ebony-like), hand-carved in high relief

Dimensions: 15 x 12 cm (per panel)

Condition: original condition with a natural crack resulting from the wood’s aging (shrinkage crack, common in carved solid wood of this age) — beautiful warm patina and finely carved details

Quantity: 2 pieces (pair, sold as a set)

A set full of character and of interest to lovers of Asian/colonial art and woodcarving—both decorative and functional as bookends.
