"Nubian Torch Holder In Polychrome Carved And Gilded Wood"
This Nubian torch-bearer, crafted from polychrome carved and gilded wood, rests on a hexagonal wooden base. The base is painted to imitate marble and bears a medallion decorated with a coat of arms. Holding her robe in her right hand and a cup in her left, she adopts a contrapposto pose, revealing her right leg; her right shoulder and breast are also bare. The polychrome, stuccoed, and gilded robe features floral, rosette, and scrolling motifs of Oriental inspiration. These decorative motifs are typical of Venetian production. A hub of the Mediterranean economy since the 12th century, Venice was the city through which a large portion of European trade with the East passed. It was therefore not unusual for wealthy Venetian merchants to adorn their interiors with such decor, characteristic of the stereotypical vision of an idealized Orient and synonymous with economic success. The coat of arms on the base of the statue could be that of an important Venetian family. The piece shows signs of normal wear and tear due to its age.
