Jean Després, Silver-plated Metal Egg Cup, 20th Century

Small silver-plated metal egg cup, “cuff” style, resting on a circular base. It is adorned with a flat-link chain design applied around the rim of the base.

Signed “J. DESPRÈS” with a point under the base.
Master’s mark (initials “JD” framing a goblet) on the neck.

Jean Després (1889–1980) was a French goldsmith from a family of glassmakers. Trained at a very young age by a Parisian silversmith who was a friend of his father’s, he also took drawing lessons and frequented the Bateau-Lavoir, where he met Braque, Picasso, Modigliani, and others. During World War I, he was drafted as a mechanical draftsman for the aviation branch, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for mechanical forms and geometric aesthetics. In 1924, he opened a workshop and a store in Avallon, his hometown, where he showcased highly modern pieces of goldsmithing and jewelry. He also exhibited regularly at the Salon and opened another store in Paris, frequented by a prestigious clientele that included Josephine Baker.
