Large Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Monteith Punch Bowl, 1150g London 1897
Antique 1897 London Sterling Silver Monteith Bowl – William Fordham & Albert Faulkner
An impressive late Victorian Queen Anne Revival solid sterling silver Monteith bowl, assayed in London in 1897 by the noted silversmith partnership of William Fordham & Albert Faulkner.
The bowl measures approximately 26 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height, with a substantial weight of approximately 1.15 kilograms. Crafted from sterling silver (.925 standard), it displays the distinctive Monteith form traditionally used for serving punch, with the scalloped rim designed to suspend wine glasses by their stems.
The deep crenellated border is richly decorated with alternating scalloped sections and applied C-scroll crest mouldings, creating a striking architectural profile. A plain horizontal moulding encircles the upper body, separating the decorative collar from the smooth, hemispherical lower bowl.
Mounted to either side are finely cast lion mask mounts retaining substantial drop-ring handles, allowing the bowl to be easily lifted and moved. To the front is an elegant hand-engraved cartouche incorporating acanthus scrollwork, diaper panels and foliate decoration surrounding a vacant central oval reserve.
The bowl stands upon a stepped circular pedestal foot, giving the piece excellent stability and presence. The underside bears London hallmarks for 1897 together with the maker’s mark of William Fordham & Albert Faulkner, now partially rubbed through age and polishing.
Condition is very good overall, with a bright reflective finish throughout. Minor surface wear, light abrasions and expected hallmark rubbing are consistent with age and careful use. A handsome and highly decorative example of late Victorian silver, combining practical functionality with the elegance of the Queen Anne Revival style.
