An Italian Walnut Wood Chest Of Drawers With Three Drawers. Bologna, 17th Century

The structure is characterized by a broad plinth base and projecting pilaster elements. The refined decorative scheme derived from Roman models (such as the twisted columns resting on large block bases and functioning as pilasters) is hardly surprising, as it enriches and visually lightens the imposing volume of the piece. It should be remembered that, at the time, the city of Bologna effectively represented the second capital of the Papal States and was therefore in close contact with the fashions and aesthetic tastes prevailing in Rome. The top of the chest, made of solid walnut, projects prominently. The narrow band running beneath the top conceals a drawer with a markedly elongated profile. The drawers are framed by delicate moulded borders, while more pronounced raised mouldings create two large recessed panels on the sides.
