A Flemish painter of the Baroque period, he pursued his career in Rome during the second half of the 17th century, blending Flemish craftsmanship with the Italian and French Baroque styles. He became famous for painting portraits at the papal court and among the Roman aristocracy.
Among his most important patrons was Queen Christina of Sweden, who is portrayed here with her friends.
