He was the second son and only boy of Jean-Baptiste Belle (born before 1642 and died in 1703), also a painter. His mother, Anne des Champs, died in 1705[1]. The birth and baptism of Alexis Simon Belle were registered in the parish of Saint-Sulpice in Paris and are recorded in Le Cabinet de l'amateur by Eugène Piot for the years 1861 and 1862.
