Matthijs Naiveu worked in his native Leiden and in Amsterdam inthe last quarter of the 17th and the first quarter of the 18thcentury. He was a very versatile, original and innovative painter. 
Herehe has revitalized a traditional subject that goes back to Hieronymus Bosch. SaintAnthony lived in solitude an ascetic life of rigorous austerity, away fromcivilization. He had to fight temptation by the devil who came to him under themost seductive or bizarre forms.
SaintAnthony tries to withstand on old bawd who is presenting him a beautiful youngwoman. In the left foreground parades a strange, winged dragon while in frontof a gate a small devil tries to seduce him with his flute music. The thistlein the right foreground testifies of the interest around 1700 in forest floorsand nature pieces.
