Adriaen van de Venne was a keen observer, painter, book illustrator and poet with a keen sense of humor. After settling in The Hague in 1625, he specialized in these humorous genre scenes. He called his art "Sinne-cunst", meaning "the art of wit".
The text in the banderole can be translated as "it's all about profit": an odd couple of street vendors carry too many goods to get to the market.
