Franciscus Carré was a Dutch painter of Flemish origin.
He painted this “Temptation” in his youth, in 1656, while living in The Hague. In 1662, he settled in Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, as a court painter, first for Stadtholder Willem Frederik van Nassau-Dietz, and then, after the latter’s sudden death in 1664, for his widow.
The Temptation of Saint Anthony is a fascinating subject, popularized by the famous Hieronymus Bosch. Private collectors and museum visitors are particularly fond of it, as a multitude of strange creatures seem to torment the saint.
