This magnificent 17th century Flemish still life, setagainst a dark background, was painted by a mysterious, unidentified painterfrom Antwerp during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. Over 100 paintings of thismaster are known, but none of them are signed. Art historians have baptised himthe Pseudo-Simons, although they had better called him the Pseudo-Gillemans.
Thecompositions of the Pseudo-Simons can sometimes be exagerated, toooverwhelmingly Baroque, a profusion of just too many ingredients that he haswanted to pile up within a single space. Not so here: this harmonious vision islight and well-balanced.
