This magnificent 17th century Flemish still life, set against a dark background, was painted by a mysterious, unidentified painter from Antwerp during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century. Over 100 paintings of this master are known, but none of them are signed. Art historians have baptised him the Pseudo-Simons, although they had better called him the Pseudo-Gillemans.  

The compositions of the Pseudo-Simons can sometimes be exagerated, too overwhelmingly Baroque, a profusion of just too many ingredients that he has wanted to pile up within a single space. Not so here: this harmonious vision is light and well-balanced.
