18th Century Italian Painting, Moses Drives Out The Shepherds

Magnificent Italian painting from the first half of the 18th century. This artwork oil on canvas depicts the biblical episode of Moses driving the shepherds from the well of Midian. Having fled Egypt, Moses helps Jethro's daughters by driving away the shepherds who were preventing them from drawing water from the well. The canvas clearly reveals the hand of the great Neapolitan artist Domenico Brandi (1684-1736), one of the greatest exponents of animal painting.

A son of an artist, Brandi also worked in Rome in the workshop of Rosa da Tivoli, where he acquired the master's bucolic and illustrative flair. Worthy of note is the quality of the execution in the landscape, with splendid classical ruins, and the pack animals, almost protagonists of the composition and depicted with anatomical precision. (The painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.)

A large, impactful painting, ideal for a reception room or prestigious professional studio. A scenic 20th-century frame, beautifully decorated, with some small losses and signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in small areas.
