Edouard Moyse depicted Jewish life by prioritizing faith over the picturesque. His scenes of Jewish festivals and synagogue life, as well as his portraits, evoke a sense of calm and inspire humility. His figures are generally set against spare, understated backgrounds. The artist also explored the lives of monks, as well as courtrooms and lawyers. Our painting dates from 1908—shortly before the artist's death—and revisits a theme he had previously addressed: a rabbi meditating on texts by candlelight. With a restrained palette and Rembrandt-esque touches—though at times leaning slightly toward the illustrative—Moyse stands out as one of the few painters of Jewish life at the turn of the 20th century.
