18th-century Silk Embroidery – The Baptism Of Christ
Polychrome embroidery from the 18th century, entirely hand-stitched in silk using the painting stitch (long and short stitch) technique.
The work depicts a religious scene — the Baptism of Christ — set within a landscape animated by architectural elements and figures in the background.
The entire composition, including the faces and hands of the figures, is completely embroidered by needle, without any painted additions, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship. It was most likely produced in a convent workshop during the 18th century, reflecting the devotion, patience, and refinement of the religious embroiderers of the time.
The colours, gently faded from prolonged exposure to light, retain a pleasing overall harmony. On close inspection, small scattered losses in the stitching can be observed, without affecting the legibility of the subject.
The embroidery is presented in a contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame with scroll and foliage decoration.
