Enkidu, Gilgamesh's God. Amulet.

A rare and beautiful depiction of Enkidu, finely carved from eggshell. Initially Gilgamesh's enemy, he became his best friend, and Gilgamesh mourned him deeply upon his death. Numerous poems celebrate this friendship. One might view them as representing the negative and positive poles of the human condition. Sumerian art, Early Dynastic period (3rd millennium). (An example of inferior quality was sold at Ader on October 25, 2024.) Provenance: Galerie Cybèle, 1980s.
