Byzantine Cross. 12th Century
Byzantine cross engraved with a standing figure of Christ.
The twisted garment evokes his baptism in the waters of the Jordan River. His facial features are elongated, his hands are slender and long, and his large eyes are in the pre-Romanesque style. This is part of a reliquary cross bearing some visible traces of gilding on the right.
