Pair Of Crystal Obelisks With Painted Intaglio Decorations, Circa 1860
This pair of crystal obelisks features hand-painted reverse-carved designs that create an optical illusion of three-dimensional depth. The visual effect depicts a cascading fountain on a pedestal, watering flowering plants or filling their basins. This ingenious glass art technique relies on the natural refraction of crystal to give the impression that the miniature is suspended in three dimensions at the very heart of the pyramid.
Material: High-density lead crystal, hand-cut and hand-polished. Decorative technique: Intaglio engraving on the reverse side (reverse cut or intaglio in reverse) combined with meticulous polychrome enamel painting. Structure: Beveled pyramidal spire with geometric facets, resting on a faceted baluster shaft and a hexagonal pedestal base. Period: Generally produced in the second half of the 19th century.
