19th-century Zinc And Polychrome Sheet Metal Ridge Cap, Folk Art
This item is a polychrome zinc ridge finial with a tulip motif . It measures 80 cm in height, a sought-after medium size that is suitable both for roof decoration (on the gable end of a dormer or turret) and for decorative use indoors.
Floral composition: The upper section consists of a central bouquet of four tulips or lilies (three open, tilted blooms and one closed bloom at the very top). The flowers are embellished with cut-out pistils and rest on long, slender leaves made of riveted and welded zinc. The pedestal and vase: The bouquet emerges from a central baluster vase (featuring handles), which in turn rests on a faceted base and a flared pedestal typical of roof ornaments. Polychromy and patina: The object retains its original paint or an antique patina combining shades of verdigris, ochre yellow, and brick red/brown. The polychrome finish on the zinc is particularly decorative and enhances the realism of the plant motifs. Condition: The piece displays beautiful natural oxidation and slight flaking of the paint, which attest to its authenticity or exposure to the elements. A small circular hole is visible in the center of the pyramidal base, historically used to secure the piece to the roof structure or metal frame. Good condition, complete, height 80 cm
