It is not easy to establish the year in which Edmond Laurent Etling was born. His age when he opened his shop at 29 rue de Paradis in Paris France, is also a mystery. However, he played an important role in the development of the art deco style and he had the vision and ability to promote and cater to a long list of noted designers of the decorative arts in the 1920s – 1930s. The company was founded in Paris, France in 1909 and they commissioned works of art in bronze, ceramic, and glass mainly from French artists. The glass was made for Etling at the Choisy-le-roi glassworks near Paris. The majority of Etling Glass was produced by its own team of glassmakers based at the Cristalleries et Verreries de Choisy-le-Roi, on the outskirts of Paris. 'Choisy-le-Roi' is a place name worth remembering. The glass production factories based there were responsible for creating the finest opalescent glass in Europe during the Art Deco period, and virtually every French glass design artist used the facilities based there. Etling was at the forefront from the very beginning of the Art Deco period.
