Pair Of 15th-century Face Studies, Painted Around 1880 -
Pair of unsigned oil-on-wood paintings.
Measuring 20 cm x 15 cm without frames, 30.5 cm x 25 cm and 29 cm x 24 cm overall.
Depicting two studies of faces taken from Jan van Eyck’s altarpiece, The Mystical Lamb of Ghent (1432), specifically the lower-left central section titled “Pagan Philosophers and Jewish Prophets” (see photo for example).
These are not fragments; these two small painted wooden panels, created around 1880, are complete and were painted by an artist of the Antwerp School during the late 19th-century trend in Flanders toward a revival of medieval and High Middle Ages paintings.
These wooden panels are in very good condition.
The paintings, which have never been cleaned and are not dirty, are in very good original condition.
Originally mounted in 1880 frames with glass backing, which explains the remarkable freshness of the paintings.
Paintings in very good original condition.
