Frame Decorated With Fleurs-de-lis And Winged Sphinxes 19th-century French Work
Rectangular frame in gilded metal, decorated with an embossed frieze featuring a repeating pattern of fleurs-de-lis set within arched motifs and accompanied by foliage.
It is surmounted by an openwork pediment composed of two winged sphinxes facing each other, arranged on either side of a central palmette, against a background of foliage.
The design combines the neoclassical vocabulary inherited from the Empire period with the fleur-de-lis, which was brought back into fashion during the Restoration.
The back and its easel were later reworked to allow the frame to be displayed as a freestanding piece.
In good condition.
