A student of Pinchon, Cramoysan primarily painted Normandy landscapes. He first exhibited in Rouen in the 1940s before showing his work in Paris, where his oil paintings hung alongside those of Vlaminck, Foujita, and Utrillo at the Galerie Pétridès.

In his most successful seascapes, a deep color palette, shifting from blue to green, exudes a subdued intensity. This is the case with this view of the port of Dieppe. The painting is classically composed in a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 ratio. In the foreground, two sailboats and a rowboat are moored; the central part of the work features a ship—probably a battleship—and the cliff. The upper third of the oil painting depicts the sky, rendered in a hazy color palette that blends seamlessly with the hues of the harbor.
