Adolphe Keller (1880–1968), Boats In An Estuary

Adolphe Keller (Brussels, 1880 – Brussels, 1968) was a Belgian painter, recognized as one of the leading figures of Post-Impressionism in Belgium. Trained at the Academy of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode under Pieter-Jan Braecke and Henri Ottevaere, he went on to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he developed a solid mastery of landscape painting and plein air painting. From an early age, he developed a passion for the effects of light and atmospheric variations, which would become the hallmark of his work.

In the early 20th century, Keller set up his studio in Nieuwpoort and devoted himself primarily to coastal landscapes and maritime scenes of the North Sea. World War I forced him to leave Belgium; he then settled in Saint-Tropez, where he discovered the light of the Mediterranean. For several decades, he painted Provençal ports, beaches, pine forests, and villages with a loose brushstroke and a luminous palette, while retaining the atmospheric sensibility he had developed during his years in Belgium.

Prized for his sense of light, his observation of nature, and the spontaneity of his brushwork, Adolphe Keller remains a major figure in 20th-century Belgian landscape painting.
