Napoleon III Liqueur Set In Blackened Wood, Late 19th Century, With A Zimberg Label
Crafted from blackened wood with a polished finish, this rectangular box features a refined architectural silhouette, accentuated by a truncated pyramid-shaped lid.
The entire structure is adorned with opulent inlays of finely chiseled brass or bronze, reflecting the eclectic and historical taste characteristic of the Napoleon III style.
The top of the lid is crowned with a bronze animal sculpture depicting a spaniel lying at rest, rendered with striking realism in the detail of its coat.
The sides and front feature superb relief medallions set within horseshoes, depicting scenes of a hound hunt with riders leaping over obstacles.
The main front reveals a masterfully crafted lock opening, framed by cabochons and topped by a delicate suspended bronze grape cluster motif.
The spandrels, edges, and borders of the casket are accented by serrated friezes, Gothic pinnacles, and motifs of oak leaves with acorns.
The piece rests elegantly on small spherical bronze feet that subtly elevate its wooden base.
Inside, the box retains its original label made of black paper with gold lettering, a precious historical signature of the Parisian house.
This inscription reads: “ZIMBERG, Manufacturer of Toiletry Sets and Liqueur Cabinets, 53 Passage des Panoramas, Successor to 15 Rue de l’Anne Comédie.”
Édouard Zimberg was a leading case maker and manufacturer of luxury accessories, in the same tradition as the famous Maison Tahan.
Located in the heart of Paris’s prestigious covered passages, he specialized in high-end cases and travel essentials.
His workshops regularly incorporated patented innovations and intricate metalwork to appeal to the high bourgeoisie of the Second Empire.
Presented in excellent condition with an authentic original patina, this case features balanced dimensions of 24.5 cm wide, 14 cm deep, and 18 cm high.
