Large Display Bookcase From A 19th-century Estate, Made Of Solid Mahogany
At the top, the projecting cornice with a rounded molding overlooks two large glass doors flanked by engaged columns and topped with carved capitals.
The original glass panels, set within molded frames with rounded upper corners, illuminate a spacious display area.
The interior, entirely finished in light wood, features four removable and adjustable shelves mounted on wooden rails.
The lower section opens with two solid doors featuring carefully selected mahogany veneer panels, arranged in a “four-leaf” pattern—or butterfly-wing curl—creating a particularly graphic geometric motif.
The entire piece rests on a massive, overhanging baseboard that anchors the visual balance of the cabinet.
The original metalwork includes discreet chiseled bronze keyholes and recessed brass locks, of Parisian craftsmanship, stamped, and in perfect working order.
Condition and anticipated restoration work: This high-quality piece is sold as-is, in need of restoration, offering an excellent foundation for a cabinetmaker or a knowledgeable enthusiast.
A significant crack is present in one of the panes of the right-hand door, requiring replacement of the glass.
At the middle rail, the blackened wooden crossbar reveals missing decorative elements.
The carved wooden frieze featuring wave motifs or stylized waves is present on the left side but has come loose; it will be included with the piece to be reattached.
The corresponding frieze on the right side is missing and will need to be recreated identically.
The lower interior shelf of the sideboard section also has some trim and support pieces that need to be repositioned or restored.
Stylistic Context and Attribution: Although this piece bears no visible cabinetmaker’s signature, its lines and quality of craftsmanship place it firmly within the distinguished tradition of the great Parisian workshops of the second half of the 19th century.
The choice of mahogany, the treatment of the moldings, and the design of the scrollwork are reminiscent of the work of renowned firms such as Maison Krieger or Jeanselme, which excelled in reinterpreting the Directoire and Empire styles for the upper middle class of the time.
Its imposing yet elegant proportions make it an ideal centerpiece for a library, a large living room, or a cabinet of curiosities. Dimensions:
