Late 18th-century Normandy Floor Clock Made Of Carved Wood, Medium-grained Oak
Traditionally carved in Normandy to be given as a wedding gift, this exceptional piece stands out for the high quality of its regional wood and the finesse of its craftsmanship.
Its overall “violin-shaped” or arched silhouette features the curved profile of the central case typical of 18th-century French design, contrasting sharply with the rigid, rectangular lines that would characterize the 19th century.
The door’s facade displays a rich repertoire of neoclassical ornamentation (circa 1775–1790) characteristic of the Louis XVI style.
The relief carving depicts a suspended ribbon bow of rare delicacy, from which floral garlands and acanthus leaf scrolls emerge.
These floral elements surmount a large central circular medallion adorned with a twisted Celtic-style or swirling rosette.
The upper section houses an iron-cage movement characteristic of timepieces from the Ancien Régime.
The white enamel dial features Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes.
It is surmounted by an exceptional cast and chiseled brass pediment, adorned with the traditional Gallic rooster facing right—a symbol of vigilance—which dominates the radiant face of the Sun King (Phoebus), surrounded by foliage and two mythical birds.
The period mechanism, visible through its bronze gears and upper bell chime, is driven by its original rope-winding system.
The base of the clock rests on a molded plinth with fluted vertical panels, reinforcing the verticality and elegance of the structure.
Although these creations are the work of anonymous master cabinetmakers and regional bronze casters, they rival the great Parisian works of the period in refinement.
This masterpiece of regional Norman cabinetmaking proudly attests to the craftsmanship of the artisans’ guilds under the Ancien Régime.
The piece has a total height of 240 cm. To ensure optimal functioning of the mechanical movement, a routine service by a clockmaker is recommended.
