Lerolle Frères, Napoleon III-era Gilded Bronze Table Clock, 19th Century

Artist: Lerolle Frères
This table or sideboard clock is distinguished by its “Haute Époque”-inspired structure in solid bronze with a double patina—gilded and nuanced.

The quadrangular case rests on front legs with scrollwork adorned with stylized foliage motifs.

The vertical posts on the front feature superb high-relief caryatids depicting the busts of female slaves or female figures.

The upper section takes the form of a fixed, molded dome, flanked at the corners by four finials and crowned with a movable carrying handle featuring flowing lines.

Behind its glass door, the square dial conceals a bronze plate engraved with a design of plant scrolls on an amati background.

The hours are marked by black Roman numerals on twelve domed cartouches of white enamel.

Two wrought-iron hands with finely crafted tips sweep across this central dial.

The sides of the case feature large glass panels that reveal the interior details and an applied faun mask. The Movement and the Lerolle House

The original movement is stamped on the back by the famous Parisian bronze foundry Lerolle Frères with the number 184.

This dynasty of art casters was renowned throughout the 19th century for the quality of its bronze furnishings.

The mechanism also bears the circular mark of the S. Marti & Cie. manufactory, which was awarded a Bronze Medal.

This prestigious combination guarantees the high technical precision of a timepiece designed during the Second Empire.

The remarkable condition of the engraving attests to the craftsmanship of a Parisian workshop at the height of its art.
